Daibhéid Abú!

Daibhéid Abú!

Seaimpíní Peile Chorcaí- sin an teideal nua a bhain Coláiste Daibhéid amach I Mainistear Fhearmaí le déanaí agus iad tar éis aghaidh a thabhairt ar Bhaile Mhistéala sa Chluiche Ceannais Shinsir. D’aineoinn na droch-choinníollacha d’imir siad go spleodrach ó thus deiridh le cúl agus 6 chuilín a fháil acu  sa chéad leath. Cian Ó Buachalla a bhain an chúl amach, agus na cuilíní roinnte idir an chaptaen Dónal Ó Leannacháin, a phairtnéir i lár na páirce Conchúir Ó Briain, agus na leaids ar na cliatháin- Darragh MacCarthaigh agus Gearóid Ó Céilleachar. Thosaigh Baile Mhistéala go tapa sa t-arna leath agus le fiche noiméad fágtha sa chluiche ní raibh ach cuilín eatarthu. Ach is ansin a tháinig na ceannairí chun cinn, agus go háirithe láidreacht na cúlaithe. Bhí Oisín Wedel agus Séan Ó Mathúna leis an lámh in uachtar tríd is tríd, agus bhí Fionn MacDomhnaill breá compórdach sa chúl. Nuair a chuir Dónal Ó Leannacháin dhá cheann i ndiaidh a chéile thar an trasnán le 5 noimead fágtha bhí a fhios ag an 200 dalta a thaisteal go mbeadh an Chorn Shinsir ag filleadh go dtí Gaelcholáiste Daibhéid suite ar bhruach an Laoi i gCathair Chorcaí. Lean an riméid ar aghaidh sa scoil ar filleadh dóibh agus chuir sé clabhsúr iontach le n-imeachtaí seachtain na Gaeilge.

Coláiste Daibhéid won the 2015 Senior Colleges Football Championship for the first time in the schools history. The growth in the school numbers in the last few years enabled the city-centre GaelCholáiste to enter the competition for the first time last year. Then they reached the semi-final losing out to the eventual winners. This year they were steadfast in their determination to win it.

Fermoy was the venue for the final on Friday 13th of March, against a much fancied St Fanahans of Mitchelstown who scored a remarkable 13 goals in their campaign. The contest between the two teams last year resulted in a one point win for Coláiste Daibhéid. This was going to be a tight contest.

With a large contingent of over 200 supporters Coláiste Daibhéid played with the benefit of the sun at their backs and despite the muddy underground conditions played a confident possession style of football. They were ably captained by Dónal Ó Leannacháin in midfield who was supported in the forward play by Conchúir Ó Briain. Having hit the crossbar a number of times Cian Ó Buachalla eventually goaled for Coláiste Daibhéid to give them a 1-6 to 0-4 lead at the interval. St Fanahans started strongly in the second half scoring a quick goal and managed to close the deficit to one point with 20 minutes to go. Coláiste Daibhéid didn’t panic and worked their way up-field to pick off a number of points from play, with Darragh McCarthaigh to the fore in many of the moves, scoring four points. As Coláiste Daibhéid continued their assault Dónal Ó Leannacháin again showed accuracy from the placed ball finishing with a total of five points. Other scorers for Coláiste Daibhéid included Gearóid Ó Céilleachair and Daragh Ó Briain. Unsung hero, Oisín Wedel, had a man-of –the –match performance at corner back. Mention must also go to Fionn MacDomhnaill in goal who produced three important saves as the game reached the final minutes.

The referees final whistle signalled a pitch invasion as Coláiste Daibhéid supporters congratulated their new champions. The game finished on the scoreline of Coláiste Daibhéid 1-14 St Fanahans 1-08. Trainer and Principal, Tadhg Ó Laighin praised the team for their dedication and effort throughout the last two years. ‘This panel of 35 students had players from 3rd year up, and included 6 sets of brothers. In many schools only the elite would ever get a look in but here in Coláiste Daibhéid we take the view that if you want to be a part of the panel you get to be a member. Then it’s up to you to stick at it. That dedication shone through today on the pitch. It’s a fantastic day in the history of this GaelCholáiste. ‘Daibhéid Abú’.
