Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id won the 2015 Senior Colleges Football Championship for the first time in the schools history. The growth in the school numbers in the last few years enabled the city-centre GaelChol\u00e1iste to enter the competition for the first time last year. Then they reached the semi-final losing out to the eventual winners. This year they were steadfast in their determination to win it.<\/p>\n

Fermoy was the venue for the final on Friday 13th<\/sup> of March, against a much fancied St Fanahans of Mitchelstown who scored a remarkable 13 goals in their campaign. The contest between the two teams last year resulted in a one point win for Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id. This was going to be a tight contest.<\/p>\n

With a large contingent of over 200 supporters Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id played with the benefit of the sun at their backs and despite the muddy underground conditions played a confident possession style of football. They were ably captained by D\u00f3nal \u00d3 Leannach\u00e1in in midfield who was supported in the forward play by Conch\u00fair \u00d3 Briain. Having hit the crossbar a number of times Cian \u00d3 Buachalla eventually goaled for Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id to give them a 1-6 to 0-4 lead at the interval. St Fanahans started strongly in the second half scoring a quick goal and managed to close the deficit to one point with 20 minutes to go. Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id didn\u2019t panic and worked their way up-field to pick off a number of points from play, with Darragh McCarthaigh to the fore in many of the moves, scoring four points. As Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id continued their assault D\u00f3nal \u00d3 Leannach\u00e1in again showed accuracy from the placed ball finishing with a total of five points. Other scorers for Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id included Gear\u00f3id \u00d3 C\u00e9illeachair and Daragh \u00d3 Briain. Unsung hero, Ois\u00edn Wedel, had a man-of \u2013the \u2013match performance at corner back. Mention must also go to Fionn MacDomhnaill in goal who produced three important saves as the game reached the final minutes.<\/p>\n

The referees final whistle signalled a pitch invasion as Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id supporters congratulated their new champions. The game finished on the scoreline of Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id 1-14 St Fanahans 1-08. Trainer and Principal, Tadhg \u00d3 Laighin praised the team for their dedication and effort throughout the last two years. \u2018This panel of 35 students had players from 3rd<\/sup> year up, and included 6 sets of brothers. In many schools only the elite would ever get a look in but here in Col\u00e1iste Daibh\u00e9id we take the view that if you want to be a part of the panel you get to be a member. Then it\u2019s up to you to stick at it. That dedication shone through today on the pitch. It\u2019s a fantastic day in the history of this GaelChol\u00e1iste. \u2018Daibh\u00e9id Ab\u00fa\u2019.<\/p>\n
